In Poulenc there is something of the monk and something of the rascal...
Francis Poulenc was clearly a self-contradictory character, but Rostand's celebrated remark that, "In Poulenc there is something of the monk and something of the rascal" presents a polarised perspective that does little to enhance our understanding of either his complex personality or his music. Poulenc himself seemed at times to enjoy the hint of notoriety that such labels attracted, and indeed did little to dispel this stereotype when he attributed the monk (his deep Catholic faith) to the influence of his father, who came from the Aveyron region of France, and the rascal (his urbanity and artistic waywardness?) to his mother, who descended from a Parisian family of artist-craftsmen. But outward bravado told only half the story, for Poulenc, despite his well-to-do origins, was a deeply insecure person, who was unfulfilled in his personal life and, perhaps more significantly, was given to bouts of severe manic-depression.

As a young man he became identified with "Les Six" a group of fellow composers (Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric, Louis Durey, and Germaine Tailleferre) who, influenced by Cocteau, Ibert and Stravinsky, were linked by a common desire to rid music of the excesses of romanticism, impressionism and nationalism prevalent at the turn of the century. It is true that a few of Poulenc's early works were characterised by a dryness of texture and tended towards flippancy. However, the greater part of his output from every stage of his career comprises skilfully constructed and thoroughly satisfying compositions. In these works it seems that the presence of both monk and rascal simultaneously (and a host of categories in between!) presented no obstacle whatsoever to formal coherence and natural expression.

He is a musical clown of the first order, a brilliant musical mimic and an adroit craftsman, who pieces together the most heterogeneous collection of musical styles to form an unmistakable personal style of his own. It is no doubt this personal synthesis of seemingly contradictory elements that makes him so successfully the 'illustrator of the surrealiste poets'. Martin Cooper (in his book French Music)

Perhaps his own words will supply a more comprehensive insight into his approach to composition:

You will find sobriety and sadness in French music, as in German or Russian music. But the French have a finer sense of proportion. We realize that sombreness and good humour are not mutually exclusive. French composers, too, write profound music but when they do, it is leavened with that lightness of spirit without which life would be unendurable.

Nowhere is this truer than in his sacred music, and especially the Stabat Mater.

The 1930's proved to be especially significant for Poulenc. In 1934 began a fruitful association as accompanist with baritone Pierre Bernac, which lasted over 25 years and resulted in the composition by Poulenc of at least 90 mélodies especially for their recitals. In 1936, deeply traumatised by the death of his composer-friend Pierre-Octave Ferroud, he went on pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Rocamadour, an experience which revived his Catholic faith and resulted in the completion within a week of his visit of Litanies à la vierge noire. The death of another friend, the artist Christian Bérard, was the inspiration for his Stabat Mater for solo soprano, mixed chorus, and orchestra. "I had the idea of a prayer of intercession," said Poulenc, "and the heart-rending words of the Stabat Mater seemed to me completely right for confiding the soul of dear Bérard to Our Lady of Rocamadour." The medieval text, attributed to 13th Century Franciscan religious poet and mystic, Jacopone da Todi is a meditation on the anguish of Mary, mother of Jesus, as she stands in his final hours at the foot of the cross. Completed within two months, Poulenc's Stabat Mater has an immediacy of expression which vividly captures the passion, suffering, sorrow, supplication, and, finally, glorious hope embodied in the prayer, perhaps more so than any other setting of the text.

The Stabat Mater

Poulenc's Stabat Mater is in twelve movements:

1.Stabat mater dolorosa (Très calme)

Stabat Mater dolorosa
Juxta crucem lacrymosa
Dum pendebat Filius.

Full of grief the Mother stood
weeping by the Cross
where hung her Son.
The pulsating quaver string accompaniment of the first movement establishes the minor mode and Poulenc's use of woodwind adds to a mood which is sombre and restrained. This understated intensity continues when the basses enter pianissimo with the first line of the prayer, and their theme is taken up by the rest of the voices after a surprise modulation, but still pianissimo. With the sobbing chromatic phrases Juxta crucem and lacrymosa Poulenc not only extends the theme but also introduces one of the work's most important motifs, which recurs in later movements. In Dum pendebat Filius, we see a brief glimpse of the passion that underlies the restraint and dignity of the movement when Poulenc briefly permits a louder dynamic and dissonant harmony for its angular melody. Restraint, however, prevails and the closing moments, which begin with a repetition of Stabat Mater, proceed with all the quiet dignity of a funeral cortège.

2. Cujus animam gementem (Allegro molto--Très violent)

Cujus animam gementem
Contristatam ac dolentem
Pertransivit gladius.
Whose spirit, groaning,
saddened and grieving,
a sword has pierced.

A sinister disjointed introduction for lower strings, bassoons and bass clarinet ushers in a frenetic and passionate movement, twice building from a bass entry to emphatic full choral outbursts and concluding with the eerie dissonance and its resolution on the word gladius produced by the altos' semitone rise and fall in an otherwise unchanged chord. Poulenc concludes the movement with an almost flippant final cadence for the orchestra.


3. O quam tristis (Très lent)

O quam tristis et afflicta
Fuit illa benedicta
Mater Unigeniti !
O how sad and afflicted
was that blessed Mother
of the Only-begotten!

In a deeply moving contrast, this movement exploits a range of choral sonorities and daring modulations, illuminating its basically a capella texture by deft touches of orchestration.


4. Quae moerebat (Andantino)

Quae moerebat et dolebatPia Mater, dum videbatNati poenas inclyti.Et tremebat dum videbatNati poenas inclyti.She mourned and grieved,the gentle Mother, as she beheld the sufferings of her illustrious Son. She trembled as she beheldthe sufferings of her illustrious Son

The suave and elegant melody, with its slick introduction and frivolous offbeat accompaniment, seems curiously incongruous, almost creating an air of indifference at odds with the gravity of the words. But it is just such an effect that renders Poulenc's setting of the next stanza even more searching and much more powerful.


5. Quis est homo (Allegro molto--Prestissimo)

Quis est homo,
qui non fleret,
Matrem Christi si videret
In tanto supplicio?
Quis non posset contristari,
Matrem Christi contemplari
Dolentem cum Filio ?
Quis ? Quis ?
Pro peccatis suae gentis
Vidit Jesum in tormentis,
Et flagellis subditum.
Who is the man that would not weep
if he saw the Mother of Christ
in such torment?
Who could not sorrow too
to contemplate Christ's Mother
grieving for her Son?
Who? Who?
For the sins of His people
she saw Jesus in torment,
and submitting to the scourge.

This movement returns to an angry and forceful mood with emphatic rhythms and angular melodic outlines. The flow is interrupted by the whispered question, Quis? Quis? but is quickly resumed prestissimo, this time with a new triplet accompaniment, and its insistent questioning continues almost hectoringly, unrelenting to the end of the movement.


6. Vidit suum (Andante)

Vidit suum dulcem Natum
Morientem desolatum
Dum emisit spiritum.

She saw her sweet offspring
forlorn in His death
as He yielded up the spirit.

A throbbing string accompaniment with added coloration from horns and harp establish the perfect ambience for the affecting soprano solo, whose falling figure and dotted rhythms are reminiscent of Baroque arias. Answering phrases from the choir Morientem, desolatum recall similar phrases in the first movement. A spine chillingly dissonant effect after the choir's Dum emisit spiritum evokes a brief mood of desolation, heightened by Poulenc's poignant a capella treatment of the final word spiritum.


7. Eja mater (Allegro)

Eja Mater, fons amoris,
Me sentire vim doloris
Fac, ut tecum lugeam.
Ah Mother, fount of love,
to feel the force of grief grant me,
that I may weep with Thee.
Reminiscent of one of Orff's Carmina Burana, the facile melody of this movement with its sparing woodwind accompaniment has a deliciously secular feel about it, which in another context would be totally inappropriate. Once more Poulenc has the foil to this apparent insouciance in the movement that follows.

8. Fac ut ardeat (Maestoso)

Fac ut ardeat cor meum
In amando Christum Deum,
Ut sibi complaceam.
Grant that my heart
may blaze with the love of Christ,
my God, that I may please Him.
A capella once more, except for the sparest instrumental interludes, the simplicity of this three-part chorus (S.C.T.) re-establishes sobriety and prayerfulness in an extraordinary way.

9. Sancta mater (Moderato--Allegretto)

Sancta Mater, istud agas,
Crucifixi fige plagas
Cordi meo valide.
Tui Nati vulnerati,
Tam dignati pro me pati,
Poenas mecum divide.
Fac me vere tecum flere,
Crucifixo condolere
Donec ego vixero.
Juxta crucem tecum stare,
Te libenter sociare .
In planctu desidero.
Virgo virginum praeclara,
Mihi jam non sis amara,
Fac me tecum plangere.
Holy Mother, grant this same,
fix the wounds of the Crucified
firmly on my heart.
Thy wounded Son,
so gracious to suffer for me,
divide his sufferings with me.
Make me truly to weep with Thee,
to grieve with Thee for the Crucified
as long as I live.
To stand with Thee by the Cross,
and willingly to join with Thee
in mourning Thy loss.
Virgin supreme among virgins,
be not harsh now to me,
make me to weep with Thee.
The basses begin the next movement with the first line of the stanza sung in the manner of a plainsong intonation, accompanied by a simple drone. The reply from the rest of the voices Crucifixi fige plagas is almost predictably forthright and declamatory but the sudden piano and dissonant idiom of Cordi meo valide offer the listener an altogether more touching and intimate response to grief. A return to 3/4 sees the beginning of a section that treats the next 9 lines with steadily increasing intensity, repeated rhythms having a cumulative mantra-like effect. The tension finally resolves into tenderness in the sumptuous melody of Virgo virginum praeclara but stark reality in the final unaccompanied Fac me tecum plangere restores the balance of this complex and deeply affecting movement.

10. Fac ut portem (Tempo. de Sarabande)

Fac ut portem Christi mortem,
Passionis fac consortem
Et plagas recolere.
Fac me plagis vulnerari,
Cruce hac inebriari,
Ob amorem Filii.
Make me to bear Christ's death,
grant me a share in His Passion,
and to reverence His wounds.
Make me to be wounded with His wounds,
drunk with the Cross
and with love for Thy Son.
The dotted rhythm and minor mode of this sarabande establish a sombre funereal mood, heightened by the use of timpani. The falling intervals of the soprano solo form an impassioned plea set against the frequently static choral writing. The memorable phrase Cruce hac inebriari hints at the paradisi Gloria which is to feature so much in the final movement.

11. Inflammatus et accensus (Animé et très rythmé)

Inflammatus et accensus,
Per te, Virgo, sim defensus,
In die judicii.Christe,
cum sit hunc exire,
Da per matrem me venire
Ad palmam victorae.
So fired and consumed with flames.
O Virgin, let me be defended by Thee,
in the day of judgment.
O Christ, when I must go hence,
grant through Thy mother
that I cometo the crown of victory.
A pulsating quaver beat underpins the exciting opening of this movement whose repetitive rhythmical patterns build climactically before being interrupted by a sudden silence. A dramatic change of mood from fear to longing anticipation brings the movement to a close, but with an unexpected twist, as an idiosyncratic and unexpected fall of a semitone in the soprano part leaves the movement unresolved, in effect a preparation for the final section.

12. Quando corpus (Très calme) *with soprano solo

Quando corpus morietur,
Fac ut animae donetur
Paradisi gloria.Amen.
When my body shall die,
grant that my spirit
may be given the glory of Paradise.Amen.
This final movement resolves all the previous tension of the Stabat Mater in a lovely extended coda in which the promise of Paradise is reiterated, over and over again. Characterised by rocking phrases shared in turn by choir and soloist with Paradisi Gloria as its most important idea, it finally dies away until it is barely audible. A pause for silence sees the return of the theme in an affirmative choral Amen to which Poulenc wryly adds two orchestral chords but with added dissonances, as if to retain the bitter-sweet quality of the work to the very end.
